City Science were commissioned by Thurrock County Council to deliver a major update to the county’s multi-modal strategic transport model. The model supports the Thurrock Local Plan to ensure that transport schemes maximise social and environmental benefits, including the need to support Thurrock Council’s decarbonisation ambitions.
In addition to developing a robust and advanced transport model, the team aimed to provide a step-change in model accessibility and transparency by allowing Thurrock Council to interrogate models and view results with ease using Cadence. Cadence provides Thurrock Council with model inputs and results to explore with ease.
Interactive mapping of local travel demand and flows is particularly important as this is often an inaccessible element of transport models. In contrast, using Cadence, this information is available efficiently and easily, providing much wider value from the transport model. Use of Cadence is particularly valuable for communicating the impact of forecasts and scenario tests for the emerging Local Plan and future business case development, making this data much more widely available and accessible.
Outcomes
By analysing current and forecast transport network operations, the model will enable sustainable development, ensuring the transport network meets the needs of those who live, work and travel within Thurrock while maximising long-term benefits.
